Letters: Hiroshima anniversary highlights wisdom of Iran treaty
As we observe the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, I hope Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, and Rep. Joe Wilson, recognize the importance of speaking up in support of diplomacy to keep nuclear bombs from Iran.
According to Eric Schlosser, humanity has avoided the repeat of a nuclear disaster by sheer luck. At least 15 times the United States has threatened to use a nuclear weapon. Add to this miscalculations and near accidents, and we see that we have a false sense of security.
I believe we need to increase the odds of survival by eliminating nuclear weapons and by supporting the accord. The agreement sets up the most extensive inspections plan ever negotiated, and it gives inspectors the access they need to make sure Iran doesn’t cheat.
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are reminders we must support efforts to make the world a safer place.
