Monday letters: DOT did great job handling I-26 crash

THE STATE

The early morning accident on I-26 this spring easily could have resulted in lives lost. By God’s grace, all we had was a major interstate shut down. I’m sure many unaware motorists cursed the Transportation Department for the delay getting to work that day. When the details about the 10 vehicles involved in the crash were learned, they may have recognized that all they had was a traffic delay.

Kudos to the Transportation Department for having the road open late that afternoon. From the trooper’s call about the accident to the maintenance engineers, the process of repair took a mere hours. I work in the construction industry, and I can tell you that this sort of response to a problem is not usual. Imagine this road being closed for a week; people would have been be outraged.

This year many politicians, community leaders and the public in general urged more funding for our transportation system. It’s a vital part of making South Carolina a great state. I’m disappointed in our governor and in all of those people who say all is well with our roads.
