Monday letters: Columbia’s sewer charges are outrageous

I am a widow living alone in a small garden home. I cannot accept the fact that I paid $64 for the last two months and $40 or more in previous months for sewer usage. Basing charges on water usage is obscene.

I have watered my small lawn three times weekly, four minutes on the front and 20 minutes on the back.

The Columbia City Council members have to put their heads together and devise a better way to charge for sewer, like a flat rate, or one based on the number of people living in a home, and stop robbing us. I pay as if I have a full house all the time.

When I complained to the City Council, they checked to see if I was behind on my payments. No, I am not. My bills are paid before I buy groceries or anything else. Neighbors around me are complaining but also know you can’t beat the system.
