Letters: Wake up to need for tougher gun laws

Another shooting, this one broadcast live on TV. The same day, my phone beeped with several messages of shootings in the Midlands. Every day, more shootings, more senseless killings.

When will we finally decide that the Second Amendment never meant that anyone could purchase automatic weapons and kill at will? When will we admit that the Second Amendment does not abrogate our constitutional right to life?

When will we — and our legislators — stop allowing the NRA to control the gun laws? How many of us must die senselessly because we refuse to pass sensible gun laws?

When an airline crashes and hundreds of people die, we conduct detailed studies, and we make changes. But each year thousands of Americans die from gun violence, and we shrug and move on to the next gun massacre.

Please, let’s join the rest of the civilized world and pass reasonable gun laws.
