Letters: Stop punishing adultery? Law professor lacks moral compass
I find Marcia Zug’s Aug. 30 letter, “Adultery too widespread to be punished in divorce,” totally frustrating. She is saying, essentially, if so many people do it, we should not punish it. That is, if most people do something, it is no longer wrong.
Has she no moral basis whatever? If we follow her reasoning, we could save a lot of trouble. Since everybody speeds on the highway, it shouldn’t be against the law. If everybody uses illegal drugs, they must no longer be illegal. Whatever is done on a widespread basis should become legal. Don’t follow the law of the land; follow the majority.
I am furious when I see that Marcia Zug is an associate professor in the USC School of Law, where she is teaching our future lawyers. We could be in for a lawless future.
