Monday letters: Baseball team needs fearsome name
I am disappointed in the new minor league baseball team’s owner for choosing such a wimpy mascot for our new baseball team. He could have selected an animal more specific to our state and more common as well. Fireflies are just as abundant in other states, while we have many native animals that are more fearsome.
A cottonmouth snake would be a much better mascot, because of the stadium’s close proximity to the river. Cottonmouths are large, venomous, river-dwelling snakes. The name Columbia Cottonmouths has a better ring to it because of the consonance in the name.
Columbia Fireflies will not catch on as easily because of the less intimidating name.
