Letters: Keep detainees at Gitmo or in supermax
I spent 30 years working in and managing 15 state correctional facilities in South Carolina, including a number of large maximum-security prisons. Housing the Guantanamo detainees in the middle of a large urban area is ridiculous and unnecessary.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has operated a supermax prison in Florence, Colo., since 1994. The facility was built to house the most dangerous inmates in the federal prison system. Former federal Prisons Director Norman Carlson said at the time the prison was opened that such a prison was “the only way to handle inmates who show absolutely no concern for human life.”
The Guantanamo detainees should not be housed anywhere on American soil. But if the Department of Defense and the White House want to continue their political game of “looking” at potential sites, they only need to look at the supermax in Colorado.
