Tim Flach’s article about Lexington County planning director ’s Charlie Compton was a tribute to Charlie as well as the citizens and the elected representatives of the county (“How Charlie Compton helped shape a county,” Sept. 22). It shows how the community grows and becomes strong socially, economically and culturally when the elected politicians, interested citizens and dedicated professionals work together.

Regardless of what is going on with the national political circus, the local politicians work for us and in our best interests. I encourage citizens to become involved and participate in the local political process; the best politicians are those closest to us, and the system works because of people like Mr. Compton.
