Monday letters: Gervais Street bridge dangerous for pedestrians

The Gervais Street Bridge over the Congaree River in Columbia: great to look at, not so great to walk across.

As we were walking across the Gervais Street bridge recently, my husband and I encountered two drivers who were texting. One of them hit the curb; luckily we were behind him. A moped driver crossed over the bridge drinking from a brown paper bag. And bicyclists were riding on the wrong side of the street on the sidewalks; twice we had to move over as they raced up on us from behind.

The sidewalks are frightfully narrow to begin with, and between the bicyclists and debris strewn as much as a foot out from the guardrail, pedestrians are pushed ever-closer to oncoming traffic.

Help! We need that area cleaned and the police to enforce the speed limit (which needs to be lowered), enforce the anti-texting law and help with our new plague of mopeds before there is a serious accident on that bridge.
