Letters: Haley changed tune on help from federal government
It seems that every time you turn around, Nikki Haley is saying South Carolina needs the federal government to butt out. Yet she didn’t hesitate to beg for help from the federal government after our disastrous floods.
We have another disaster unfolding now. It is the disaster of dysfunctional government caused in large part by a faction of the Republican Party — Nikki Haley’s faction — that is determined to burn down the government in a scorched-earth tantrum. Gone are the days of functional government with the spirit of cooperation, compromise and hard work.
What if Washington had responded to Nikki Haley’s appeal for disaster relief by saying, “You said you never want to depend on D.C. — hope everything works out for you”?
Nikki Haley’s sentiment about seeking freedom from the federal government reveals the intrinsic flaw of all the tea party adherents: They are against the federal government — until they need it.
