Letters: Work to build bridges between youth, police

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending an awards ceremony for the White House Champions of Change, for building bridges between youth and law enforcement. We heard from Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and policy advisers as well as police officers and youth, who discussed how officers have tried to rebuild trust within their community. The bottom-line message from everyone was the same: We must bring more ideas to our cities to help build a positive bridge between the community and law enforcement.

As a native of South Carolina, graduate of S.C. State University and community activist, I realize that I must continue fighting for what’s right and using my voice for the betterment of my community. We have to ensure that police departments are protecting all of our communities. This event was a stepping stone for change.
