Before you decide that the Spring Valley student was abused, ponder this: In the past two months, at least 10 students had to be escorted from my class; twice the school resource officer was involved. The problem: Students defied my instructions to change seats or apologize to a classmate.

A number of students have told me I cannot make them do anything they do not want to do. A parent said she will never make her daughter do anything she does not want to do. Police and employers daily contend with the same disdain for authority. It is taught by parents, coaches and media.

Before you crucify that officer, spend a month in a high school classroom, and then offer feasible alternatives. Educators would greatly appreciate it.
