Letters: State pay for missed flood work is unfair

gmelendez@thestate.com

State employees being paid for the work they missed because of the floods is business as usual with an elite government that puts common citizens in a lower class than its employees. When thousands of South Carolinians have lost property, friends and jobs, our government is telling them that they also have to help pay for lost wages of others who work for the government. First there were paid holidays, then pay for “snow days” and now in the face of a statewide catastrophe, our state is putting its elite staff ahead of the common workers.

Is it any wonder Donald Trump finds so many followers when he rails against the elite politicians who play fast and loose with those they deem beneath them? There is no reason for any state employee to make the effort to show up during another flood, hurricane, earthquake, tornado or whatever. They know they’ll get paid without putting in their time. What a wonderful job.
