Letters: Next storm could be much worse
While many consider the recent floods a rare meteorological event, the fact is that with global warning, they may not be. We wouldn’t expect this type of event to occur for another 1,000 years, but to Mother Nature 1,000 years is not even the blink of an eye. She measures time in the billions of years.
Let us also not forget that the August 1886 Charleston earthquake was felt in Columbia and beyond. In repairing our dams and bridges, we should upgrade well beyond the minimum. And let us not forget that water runs downhill.
