Letters: Lake owners need to take responsibility

I have a home on beautiful Lake Woodcreek in upper Richland County. As soon as it was determined that the lake would be heavily impacted by the October rains, our executive board and residents met to determine what actions would be required in the event of dam failure. But our sturdy, well-constructed, well-maintained dam did not fail, though some minor deficiencies were noted.

Since inception, our association has had strong, enforceable rules governing dam safety and lake management. We will make the repairs and upgrades mandated by DHEC and suggested by an engineering consultant, all at our own expense. We will do this because we understand the risk and responsibility of living on a large body of water, fed by a major creek.

Similar rules and procedures should be required for all private lakes and ponds in our state.
