Monday letters: Steve Spurrier is a quitter

Then-USC head football coach Steve Spurrier

Steve Spurrier is a legend and an icon. He has been a fixture on the college football landscape for decades. However, when a college football coach ceases to be employed in the middle of a horrific season, it means he either has been fired or else he is a quitter unless there are serious health or family issues involved. The word “retirement” in this case is simply insulting to readers and is lazy, cowardly journalism. Given his place in college football history, moreover that of the University of South Carolina, his departure warrants accurate reporting. Call it what it is.
