Letters: Fight homelessness, hunger, now and all year long

At Thanksgiving, we are reminded of the blessings of family, friends and an abundance of food. This year, the recent memory of the floods brings a heightened appreciation as we grieve with families and friends in the losses of homes, heirlooms and even lives. Transitions played an instrumental role in providing shelter and meals during the floods. As board chair, I saw compassion in action as our team served those in need.

Nov. 15-21 is Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week, when we are called to reflect on how each of us can be a part of eliminating homelessness and hunger in the Midlands. Please join us at Tapp’s Arts Center on Tuesday for the Reconstructing Home Art Show, a silent auction of paintings by residents of Transitions. Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin will also speak at the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless prayer breakfast for the homeless at Washington Street United Methodist Church on Nov. 20.

As a state, we have seen what faith and strength can accomplish; as a community, let us do the same to ensure that we remember those in need — not only during the holidays, but all year long.
