Letters: Heroes helped us through floods

In the early hours of Oct. 4, a fast-moving disaster overwhelmed the Irmo Fire Department within hours. As the number of homes affected by the floods in the Irmo/St. Andrews area climbed to more than 300 and the calls for rescue assistance passed the 200 mark, it was clear that we could not handle this alone.

Without hesitation we were joined by citizen responders who worked side by side with us helping neighbors and strangers by any means possible and for hours on end. These actions were quickly repeated by our churches, businesses and civic groups, which fed and clothed anyone who needed help.

This tight community showed what they were made of for those hours and days, and we were proud to have them with us. We have a long recovery ahead, but given what I have seen so far, I know we have what it takes to succeed.
