Letters: Gowdy ignores other lost lives

The loss of a life through violent means is a gross tragedy anywhere it happens; the loss of our four countrymen in Libya was certainly no less.

Perhaps Congressman Trey Gowdy can muster up just a tad of sympathy for the poor souls who are estimated to number as few as 209 and as many as 551 S.C. citizens who will die this year because his fellow Republicans in the General Assembly and the governor’s office refuse to accept the Medicaid funding available to South Carolina under the Affordable Care Act — funds derived from taxes paid by the people of South Carolina.

If that doesn’t move him, perhaps he can have a moment of silence for the more than 4,000 Americans and more than 100,000 Iraqis who perished in a war predicated on a proven lie. Maybe he will find a little extra time in order to, as he says about the Benghazi probe, “see every single solitary relevant material document” revealing the reasons for the forced march to a disastrous war in Iraq.

To borrow a few more words from Mr. Gowdy, “I know our fellow citizens can handle the truth, but only if they get access to it.”
