Monday letters: Stop complaining about Spurrier pay

Former USC head football coach Steve Spurrier reflects on his resignation.

I have read enough complaints that Steve Spurrier is getting paid since his resignation. If a CEO was no longer effective as a leader for a major corporation, he or she would get a severance package or he or she would litigate to get it. How soon we forget our 11-3 seasons.

When Spurrier got bonuses and raises, he shared them with his coaches. His wife, Jeri, poured her heart out for our players. Spurrier could have commanded a lot more than we paid him. Do you think Alabama coach Nick Saban would have shared his bonuses and raises with his coaches?

We had a good coach. He led our players with morality, dignity and the belief that winning was something you worked for. He was worn out, burned out. Though we were all shocked that he left in the middle of the season, he was right to decide that hanging around would not be good for the team.

I am thankful Steve and Jeri Spurrier were here. The newspaper has done a good job of listing his accomplishments. He does not deserve to be run out on a rail. He made a huge difference at South Carolina. It’s time to quit whining, shut up and focus on tomorrow.
