Letters: Social Security recipients deserve COLA

KRT

The Social Security Administration reports that “With consumer prices down over the past year, monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 65 million Americans will not automatically increase in 2016. “Really? Prices down?

Anyone with car insurance and house insurance knows that prices increase every year. Not to mention groceries. Compare your 2014 credit card statements to the 2015 statements. Add up grocery prices, and be prepared for a shock.

Today’s retirees have spent a lifetime contributing to Social Security. It seems to me that Social Security income has been earned and paid for by the sweat-of-the-brow work of its recipients.

Why are federal employees scheduled for a wage increase next year, but not Social Security retirees? The answer: Federal employees have a union.

We must all become lobbyists for Social Security. Contact your congressmen. Tell them to control federal costs by eliminating government waste and not on the shoulders of those who can least afford it: retirees.
