Monday letters: To fix SC schools, eliminate districts
The state Supreme Court, the Legislature, the school districts that sued the state — none of them has a clue. All the Legislature knows how to do is cut taxes.
The way to improve the schools is to eliminate the more than 80 school districts, along with nearly 1,000 school board members and all of their staffs. Fund the schools with a statewide tax; goodbye to the horse-and-buggy days.
The political consequences would be tough, but it is the right thing to do. I caught hell for doing away with the Richland County Board of Education and for helping merge two school districts; I had the votes to merge Richland 1 and 2, but politics won out.
