Monday letters: Make a difference: Support Souper Bowl

I’m a 17-year-old who has been heavily involved in the Souper Bowl of Caring, which started here in Columbia. This year I was given the amazing opportunity to become a member of Souper Bowl’s National Youth Advisory Board.

Hunger and poverty exist right here in Columbia: 17 percent of Richland County is hungry, with 20 percent of children not getting sufficient food. We often feel that as individuals, we can’t make a difference, but through Souper Bowl of Caring, everyone in Columbia can help care for our neighbors in need.

I want to invite all schools, places of worship, scouts and businesses to take up a collection on or near Super Bowl Sunday. Every penny collected will be donated directly to a local charity.

The Souper Bowl helps show us the impact our individual efforts have made as it keeps a national tally on its website. Everyone can get involved and find more information at tacklehunger.org.
