Monday letters: Traditional GOP exclusion suddenly bothers Haley
Republicans have been practicing Donald Trump’s brand of exclusion of various groups of people as far back as I can remember. Latinos and Muslims are just another on the long list of targets.
Gov. Nikki Haley in her first term excluded some Democratic legislators from a reception at the end of the session. She came for the Democrats. She then used her bully pulpit to attack union members’ right to organize and negotiate for decent salaries and benefits. S.C. workers without union rights make less than the median income. She came for the trade unions.
Now Gov. Haley appears fearful that she too might be targeted for exclusion by Republicans, and she is suddenly against Trump targeting Muslims. After all, as the old poem goes, first the trade unions, then the Jews, and then they came for me.
Like Gov. Haley, other Republicans are finally looking ahead to the fact that one day, they will come for them too.
