Letters: Trump exposes ugly underbelly of GOP

Donald Trump’s poll numbers have remained relatively stable despite his declarations that he would build a wall between the United States and Mexico, deport 11 million illegal immigrants, halt the entry of Muslims into the United States and create a mandatory registry of all Muslims residing in our country — all this and more while promising to “make America great again.”

It makes me think of a pledge some 75 years ago to “make Germany great again” by registering Jews and deporting them to concentration camps.

It’s troubling enough that Fox News and conservative pundits have enthusiastically bought into Trump’s un-American hate rhetoric. However, the more alarming reality is that more than a quarter of his party members continue to enthusiastically rally behind him.

Donald Trump is the Hurricane Katrina of the Republican Party. Just as Katrina exposed the ugly underbelly of abject poverty and racism in New Orleans, Trump has exposed the ugly underbelly of elitism, racism, ignorance, discrimination and intolerance embraced by millions of American citizens.

Shameful … and dangerous.
