Monday letters: Catching income tax cheats should be routine

We read constantly about people who haven’t paid their income taxes for years — most recently two local officials whose failure to file and pay taxes was discovered during an investigation.

Don’t the state and federal governments have means of checking to see if we have paid our taxes? Why did this take an investigation?

It seems to be a problem with the system or lack of enforcement.
