Monday letters: Some things can’t be done responsibly

tglantz@thestate.com

I’m tired of seeing the TV ads for the S.C. lottery, where the executive director is sitting with presumably several counselors who work with those guilty of irresponsibly buying lottery tickets.

After a long career devoted to individuals with problematic behaviors, it concerns me that counselors would allow themselves to be used as props for the hypocritical admonition to “play responsibly.” The state lottery has done a masterful job of manipulating people, especially those who can least afford it, to buy lottery tickets in an irresponsible manner.

Speaking of irresponsible behavior, the Jan. 15 newspaper noted that it was “Beer Week.” The beer makers caution people to “drink responsibly.” It was especially interesting to note that at one watering hole, participants could both drink beer and sing hymns. “How Great Thou Art.”
