Letters: Voters forget the real Reagan

President Ronald Reagan

It’s our turn to get all the attention from the presidential candidates. It’s interesting how the GOP candidates keep trying to associate themselves with Ronald Reagan. They seem to have forgotten that the last president to grant undocumented workers amnesty was Ronald Reagan. Millions today enjoy full citizenship, thanks to his actions.

They are dedicated Americans, who’ve become business owners and teachers and above all love their country. If the policies of the current GOP candidates were in place in the past, Marco Rubio would have grown up in Cuba, Jeb Bush could not marry his wife and Donald Trump could not have married two of his three wives.

Why are we so afraid of this current wave of immigrants? Because they are different from “us.” They sound different and eat different foods than “we” do.

When they first came, so did the Cubans, the Italians, the Germans and even the Irish. It took time, but each group assimilated into the American society, and we are better for it.

I miss the real GOP. Where have you gone?
