While our constitutional philosophies were often miles apart, I held in high regard Justice Antonin Scalia’s background, incredible intellect, humor and writing, which spoke with great clarity.

I found it appalling that within a couple hours of his death, the media and the presidential candidates from both parties were in a frenzy about whether the president should or could nominate his replacement and the judicial philosophy that nominee should have.

Were I a candidate, I would like to think I would have the wisdom, courage and courtesy to stay above the fray and withhold getting into that political fight out of respect for the justice and his family, until his long service to the country, his time on the bench and his death were properly acknowledged and honored.

I am terribly disappointed how the candidates and media have handled the situation. They should have at least let his body get cold before they made his vacancy an ugly political fight. Peace to his family.
