Monday letters: SC lottery is out of control
As a former resident of California, I am appalled by how many lottery drawings there are here. All of us would like to win a lot of money, but California has one lottery, with two drawings a week. People who would enjoy winning have a chance, but they don’t go bankrupt on $2 a week. People here have a lot less money, but they are encouraged to spend it on several drawings a day.
The state says it goes to education, but if people spend their food money or rent money on the lottery, education does not matter to them or their family. South Carolina needs to set limits on this gambling, because it could destroy its citizens. I realize the state should not legislate people’s morals, but it should recognize how many ways people throw their money away. Gambling can become addictive and should not be so easy to do.
