Letters: School districts shouldn’t charge student fees
Why must the students in Lexington-Richland District 5 pay exorbitant fees for supplies and materials when the district annually receives in the neighborhood of $60 million from property taxes and $100 million from the state?
Many parents cannot afford these fees. School districts need to raise the taxes on those who can most afford to pay a little more in order to help those families who are struggling the most financially.
Please take a closer look at your district’s budget proposals to better understand its income and expenditures. Raise these questions at your school board meetings. And support those prospective school board members who want to get rid of these unnecessary fees.
