Letters: US a great country with awful politicians

AP

As a soon-to-be nonagenarian and a World War II veteran, I have worked and lived in five foreign countries with people of different ethnic, political and religious backgrounds. I kept up with U.S. news and tried to answer thorny questions about the Nixon, Clinton and Bush political extravaganzas.

While I was embarrassed then, I am disgusted now by the Ugly American image that is portrayed by candidates who call others liars or respond with “sue me” and the overblown caustic coverage given to a global world by the 24-hour news channels.

With almost 90 years of international pride in being an American, it is painful to me to hear our partisan wannabe presidents assail each other with ugly rhetorical histrionics. Despite my disgust, I am extremely proud of my country. God bless America and all of our sometimes-too-generous freedoms.
