Monday letters: Culture to blame for litter problem
I agree with the recent letter writer that the litter along our roads in South Carolina reflects a lack of pride and civility among many in our society (“We can all help reduce litter,” Feb. 29). But this is a result of an uncivil culture. There are those who are only concerned about what benefits them and who couldn’t care less about what is best for the state’s or the country’s image.
I have been embarrassed as I tried to explain and make excuses to my visiting German in-laws about our untidy and unkept roadsides and landscape.
I have grave concerns about the image people of other advanced countries have of us, but embedded cultural practices are difficult to rid oneself of. Multicultural differences can be problematic for many of us who are blessed with a civil nature about doing what is right for all.
