Letters: Don’t dumb down high school grading system
The sales pitch for going from a seven- to a 10-point grading system is that it will level the playing field for students in South Carolina who compete for scholarships against students from states with a 10-point system. I don’t buy it.
Making it easier for a student to obtain a higher GPA by lowering the standard is just another example of the dumbing down of this country.
Just because other states have opted to do this is not a valid reason for our state to do the same. I can certainly understand why some college coaches are in favor of doing this: Lowering the bar expands the pool of eligible recruits. What will be our response if, sometime in the future, surrounding states go to a 15-point system?
