Letters: Plans to ‘fix’ SC retirement system merit attention
I always get suspicious when lawmakers start “fixing” things. So when I was told that House Speaker Jay Lucas introduced H.5006, H.5007 and H.5008 to “fix” my retirement system, the hairs on the back of my head came to attention.
The study of any retirement legislation requires an auditor to the left, a lawyer to the right and a large supply of your favorite alcoholic beverage in the middle, so I have a couple of questions.
Will this cut back on the benefits enjoyed by retirees and raise the costs of those who are paying into the system? And will the “fix” for retired teachers and state employees also apply to retired legislators and judges, or will their systems be fixed under separate and unequal legislation?
