Letters: Assault on your freedom? What about my freedoms?
What Jim Clark didn’t consider in his April 11 letter declaring his right to drive while talking on his cell phone (“Keep the government out of my driving choices”) is that he doesn’t have the right to harm other people.
Distracted driving (whether talking or texting) causes accidents.
So if he rear-ends an ambulance or, worse, splashes some 8-year-old bicyclist all over the front of his car, it’s not just his problem.
As for not wearing a motorcycle helmet, if he ends up a paraplegic for not wearing one, it’s us, society, who’ll have to pay for him to be spoon fed for the rest of his irresponsible life.
I’d suggest that if he wants to engage in risky behavior, he should attend a Donald Trump rally while holding a “Black Lives Matter” placard.
I expect he’d be sorry he didn’t wear his helmet then.
