Letters: Thanks to a great scoutmaster
More than two dozen Eagle Scouts from the late ’50s to the early ’60s recently gathered to pay their respects and celebrate the life of Julius Walker (Jay) McKay, who had just celebrated his 93rd birthday.
Jay was not just a scoutmaster; he was a moral compass and personal mentor to many of the Scouts who passed through Troop and Post 4 on their way to adulthood. Jay was our friend, a friend who selflessly gave his time and resources to his Scouts to ensure that they were given the right tools to move on to the next phase of male adulthood.
The older Eagle Scouts were primed to give a little bit back for the continuation of Scouting at Troop 4 of St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Episcopal Church. A friendly competition ensued, and the result was a $200 contribution from the graying Eagle Scouts to the scoutmaster of Troop 4, Dan Bilderback.
