Letters: Shealy working for children, families

SC Sen Katrina Shealy questions then-DSS Director Lillian Koller.

I have worked with Sen. Katrina Shealy on several occasions since we met in 2012, and I am impressed with her desire to improve the system.

Her work on behalf of children and families deserves much more credit that any of us could ever give. Her efforts against domestic violence, and her work on the Senate’s Department of Social Services oversight panel have been nothing short of amazing. I want South Carolina to know what a huge part she is playing in making improvements at DSS.

In one case, children from one family were to be placed in foster care and adopted to different stranger families. Because she became involved, those children will now be able to grow up with their grandparents. The efforts of Sen. Shealy and her staff saved this family.

I have never seen another member of any legislative body more dedicated. Sen. Shealy is a rare elected official who is willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help all of South Carolina’s citizens. We need more like her in the Senate
