Letters: Haley should back bathroom bill
Gov. Nikki Haley’s opposition to the anti-transgender restroom legislation is disappointing. Cardboard conservatives flee when the heat is on, forgetting who brought them to the dance.
Perhaps the governor and mercenary legislators are focused on avoiding boycotts threatened against Georgia and North Carolina. Let’s not place money over safety. Our state likely would lose some concerts and business, but so what? Safety and ethics have never been free. Sacrifice is necessary. We need gritty leaders who will not sell us out for a buck. Outsiders should not be dictating South Carolina policy.
Gov. Haley rejects Sen. Lee Bright’s bill but apparently has no better firewall. To say this isn’t or won’t be a problem is patronizing spin.
Charlotte City Council’s pro-transgender law is egregious; Breitbart News reported earlier this year that the homosexual leader of efforts in North Carolina to allow men to use women’s bathrooms was a convicted and registered sex offender.
Let’s not sell our soul. It’s time for a new kind of candidate — anti-establishment — who puts ethics over money. We need tough, high-minded leaders who will proudly, unashamedly protect our children.
