Letters: SC roads failing because of bad design

As a retiree from the New York state transportation department, I can tell you the simple reason roads are coming apart in South Carolina is that they are not built right to start with.

There are many problems, but I will simply mention underdesigned subbase/subgrades, poorly designed drainage systems and the failure to properly crown roadways to improve runoff. The numbers being tossed around about how much it will cost to bring this state into balance with our neighbors are likely low.

I can only hope the Legislature gets it together and formulates a solution.

It is laughable to drive around here on roads in as bad a condition as those in Buffalo, where the constant salt and freeze-thaw cycles destroy them.
