Letters: Government acts when we don’t

AP

I am 46 years old and registered for Selective Service and to vote 26 years ago. I say that because that is when I gained my voice as a citizen. I have voted in elections and had deep and lengthy discussions with friends about issues in our country; but I have never done anything about it. I am sorry; it is my fault.

I have sat and been tolerant, hoping that common sense would prevail. I have adjusted myself to give way to rights others believe they have been denied. I believe in the pursuit of happiness. I believe all citizens should have equal access to all opportunities.

Charlotte passed an ordinance. North Carolina responded with a law. The federal government responded with a lawsuit and threats of withholding funds. Now, the issue has made it to our schools. The federal government is using bully tactics instead of allowing the good citizens to treat each other kindly.

I have done nothing as a citizen to change or direct these types of decisions. I am sorry. It is my fault.
