Letters: SC Lawmakers looking out for business, not us

tglantz@thestate.com

Legislation is now before the House that will limit citizens’ right to file suit against industries that pollute. My community is trying to stop pollution of our streams and ponds along Tom’s Creek near Gaston. Our environmental laws and regulations are not enough to prevent continued contamination of our property, and now our representatives want to take away our civil right to seek justice in a court of law.

Enough is enough. We elect our representatives to serve on our behalf, to be our voice and protect our interests. What we get are politicians who tell us everything we want to hear to gain a position of authority for their own agenda and wealth. How many citizens do you think are being represented when legislation is specifically written to benefit big business? State Rep. Stephen Goldfinch, R-Georgetown, said power companies can “get stuck in an untenable position” over coal ash and “Our power companies need remedy and a solution here.”

Who is being served here? Who are our politicians representing? We put them there to do a job. The problem is we don’t realize that we the people can vote them out. We have the power to invoke term limits with a simple vote. I say vote them out.
