Letters: Why can’t SC Legislature get anything done?

tdominick@thestate.com

In the S.C. Legislature, there’s a fundamental breakdown between ideals and results. Why can’t anything positive seem to get accomplished? We have crumbling roads, unemployment above the national average, high crime rates, low-ranking schools and high taxes.

It’s time to step up and start making responsible decisions, time to have accountability with where tax dollars are spent. We have a top income tax rate of 7 percent, property taxes and a state sales tax rate of 6 percent, and with local taxes taking it to as much as 10 percent. What are we getting for our investment? Accountability and consistency will help restore faith in the system.

With Republican majorities in state government, you’d think this would be a recipe for utopia, the perfect opportunity to forge a model society for prosperity and personal freedoms. I don’t understand why the Legislature consistently flails when it comes to commonsense spending, sound legislation, accountability and progress.
