Letters: More help needed to restore Olympia

tdominick@thestate.com

Thanks to Jeff Wilkerson for his insightful “Restoring Olympia” package (May 22). Jeff took the many diverse strands of interest and wove them together to create an accurate picture of what the mill village is facing. Tim Dominick did a fine job with his photos and videos supporting the article, as well.

I do question the statement about mill workers receiving free rent of the houses; nothing in my research or my personal experience indicates free rent. The workers paid admittedly low rents — $3.50-$5 every two weeks from low salaries — but they did pay.

I would also like to give enormous credit to Richland County Conservation Commission and Richland County Community Block Grant for generous support, without which the Olympia-Granby Community Space and Mill Village Museum would not be where we are. We need their continued support along with that of business partners and all lintheads who have deep roots in the village to keep this project moving forward.
