Letters: SC politicians ignoring Zika threat

AP

This month we learned that at least three babies have been born in the United States with the severe birth defect microcephaly (abnormally small head), as a result of the Zika virus. We knew it was coming. President Obama has been pleading with Congress for months to release funds to fight this hideous disease. The CDC is panicking because officials know this is spiraling toward a pandemic. But U.S. Reps. Jeff Duncan and Trey Gowdy and Sens. Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham are part of the Republican majority dragging their feet because you allow them to.

Are you willing to accept birth defects for S.C. children while your politicians focus on self-serving agendas such as the Benghazi Committee? Think it won’t happen? It already is — just like the CDC and the World Health Organization predicted. When it hits home, be prepared for that politically practiced sorrowful look from these public servants. That’s the only support you will get when a S.C. child suffers with birth defects caused by the Zika virus.
