How does one say goodbye to a dear friend, colleague and leader? Perhaps the best way is by remembering.

When I think of Fred Sheheen, I remember his tenacity, his dedication to his state, his commitment to seamless quality education for all citizens of South Carolina and his joyous laughter.

‘He loved every minute’: Sheheen eulogized as family man, public servant

Fred was a partner with us in K-12 education, and we worked well together. My memories include our collaborations: developing Curriculum Frameworks, implementing the first Math and Science Hubs, and installing NCATE standards for all teacher-education programs in South Carolina.

My memories also comprise his love for Rose, of family, his love for the arts, his love for his state.

Fred was a man of strength, of policy, of equity and of courage; his focus was always on the state and the students, even when his stand was unpopular.

It is hard to say goodbye.

I hope that in our farewell and final tribute, we will remember Fred with fondness and respect as we honor his public service and his many contributions to our state.

Rest in peace, dear Fred; we will remember.
