Letters: USC baseball fans behaving badly
The umpires at USC baseball games must have the patience of Job and cool heads. It is hard enough to call balls and strikes without the benefit of slow motion, with fastballs topping 90 mph and bang-bang plays on the bases, and they do an excellent job most of the time.
Everybody says we have the best fans in college baseball, and for the most part we do, but unfortunately from where I sit, only a few feet from the umpire and players, I see and hear a different fan base — a mean, nasty and hateful bunch.
These are not students, but high-dollar adult donors who are continually haranguing the umpires with personal insults, even between innings.
It was fun to listen to those guys for a couple of years, but it grows old and shows lack of sportsmanship not only to opposing players and fans but also to our children who are there.
My brother says it’s part of the game, but it shouldn’t be.
