Letters: How Democrats, Republicans differ on guns

AP

Just in case anyone is still confused, here is an illustration of the basic difference between Democratic and Republican lawmakers when it comes to gun control.

Democrats are trying to limit access to military-style assault weapons — the kind of gun that is designed to inflict mass casualties, and the choice of the shooters in the horrific massacres that occurred in Aurora, Newtown, San Bernardino and Orlando.

Republicans are offering these guns as door prizes. NBC news reports that a Republican candidate for Congress from Florida “has launched a contest on his Facebook campaign page to give away a semi-automatic rifle on Independence Day.” Seriously; the guy is from Florida. In Tennessee, another Republican candidate for Congress planned to raffle two AR-15s during his June 25 “Hog Fest & Turkey Shoot” campaign event. Not surprisingly, both men have A+ ratings from the NRA. For the GOP, it’s really about every citizen being armed to the teeth, common sense be damned.

Because we all know it will happen, I’d like to “thank” Republican politicians in advance for their “heartfelt” thoughts and prayers for the innocent victims of the next mass shooting.
