Amidst the fireworks and other celebrations commemorating our nation’s Declaration of Independence and sovereignty, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department is inviting the community to participate in a memorial workout honoring the life and legacy of fallen Richland County sheriff’s deputy, National Guardsman and Citadel graduate Ryan Rawl.

Ryan was killed in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber in June 2012.

He was an outstanding officer, soldier, brother, son, father and husband who was beloved by his colleagues and the children he mentored (at the time of his death, Ryan served as a school resource officer).

What’s more, he was the living embodiment of valor and integrity.

It is for these reasons and many more that we encourage you to come out to the State House at 8 a.m. on Monday to participate or cheer on this special workout.

I can think of no better way to celebrate our nation’s independence than by honoring Ryan’s sacrifice.
