Letters: Don’t blame Second Amendment for Orlando shootings

AP

The Orlando shooter was not executing his Second Amendment rights, as Dean Slade asserted in his June 20 column, “We must balance the Second Amendment with Americans’ basic rights.”

The Second Amendment is one of the inalienable rights denoted in the Constitution. This amendment guarantees the right to bear arms to defend against a tyrannical government and preserve another God-given right: our liberty.

Just as flawed and specious was his claim that “we gave him freedom/means to commit this act, and we call it the Second Amendment.” This was a heinous act of murder. The Constitution was written by moral people, thinkers, philosophers, however, flawed as humans go. Not by cold-blooded killers.
